Paul's Case – Brief Summary

Paul, a small-town youth, does not fit in with his surroundings. Because he craves an idealized life and places the need for art and beauty above the values and expectations of the community, he feels like an outcast. At the first opportunity, he steals money and escapes to New York, where he hopes to find what he is seeking. Once there, he is unable to adapt to the lifestyle he had dreamt of, and in the end he commits suicide rather than return to a drab life devoid of art and inspiration.
