One of the most disheartening aspects of working with clients who have serious addiction and/or mental health issues is their frequent contact with the police. Unless these men and women are sheltered in a treatment program or supportive housing, they tend to have periods when they become frustrated and out of control.
All too real examples can be found in the streets, shelters and drop-in centers in the downtown areas of most cities. There are the men, women, and youth who cycle in and out of emergency shelters, who sleep in alleyways, store entrances, and who crowd the soup kitchens during the day. Sometimes they are off their medications, or are simply ingesting too much alcohol, and too many street drugs.
These are the people many non-profit organizations struggle to serve. Unfortunately, these clients are often so disruptive that the neighbors are continually calling the police. Sometimes, even the agency staff cannot handle the situation and have to make the call.
