Recently, D.C.'s Board of Elections and Ethics denied a measure that would allow voters to ban same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia, because they claimed it conflicts with a 1977 Human Rights Act which guards against discrimination. The bill passed 11-2 in the first phase of the process and a final vote on the measure is set for December 15. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is expected to sign the bill later this month.
Same Sex Marriage in DC
Many who oppose same-sex marriage in the District say the actions taken by the Board are absurd and questioned whether the Act is in compliance with their 15th Amendment Right to vote as a democracy on the measure. Also, some opponents of same-sex marriage believe the bill encroaches upon their First Amendment Rights: respecting the establishment of religion, the free exercise of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of the press, as Greg Palmer explained.
"This country was and is supposed to be a democracy where the majority of the people govern," says Greg Palmer, a licensed mental health therapist and president of a Maryland & D.C. human services organization. "We the people in order to form a more perfect union — must allow the majority of the people to direct the moral compass of our government and our country: if not, let's not call America a democracy."
