An 11-city consortium founded the Cultural Data Project, which is designed to keep a finger on the pulse of American arts and cultural nonprofits. Pittsburgh is one of the 11, while Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Kansas City MO, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Richmond and St. Louis complete the Project’s current membership.
Latest on the list of key topics to chronicle about museums, theatre groups, symphonies, opera companies, et. al is the charitable generosity of individuals toward keeping such treasures alive and growing. The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council (GPAC) set out to unearth the role that Pittsburghers play in donating time and treasure for arts entities as diverse as Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, the Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center and Attack Theatre. As one would expect, reams of data reaching nationwide were also part of the research.
Not as Quick with Donations to Arts/Cultural Groups as Previously Thought?
GPAC quickly found that Pittsburgh area residents — and their counterparts in most cities in the Project — aren't quite as charitable as they probably thought. In Pittsburgh, that problem stems, in part, from a large, deep-pocketed foundation community that has been in place for at least a century. That, and a fairly large group of wealthy individuals who help to open, run, fund — and keep open — the region's arts/cultural sites, has turned many Pittsburghers to donating to food banks, animal shelters, earthquakes in Haiti or coal mine tragedies in West Virginia.
