Don't let the excitement of a first travel assignment lead to accepting a lousy contract. While most travel companies are fair, there are some companies that will take advantage of a rookie traveler. By impressing a novice with an attractive hourly rate, a company can completely forget to mention the other perks that are available.
Travel companies work on a margin. They receive a specific amount of money from a hospital for each travel assignment. Part of that money goes to the traveler in the form of pay, housing allowance, licenses, drug testing, and so on. The company also has to pay for health benefits and taxes. The rest is profit. How much profit depends on how well the traveler understands what is available and negotiable.
The Basics of a Travel Contract
At the very least, the contract should be specific when it lays out the particulars of the assignment. The name and address of the hospital, as well as the contact person, should be clear. The start and stop dates of the contract should be accurate.
